# How to Create a Custom Attribute

# Creating a custom attribute

You can create a custom attribute when you cannot find one that you are looking for. Machine Learning processes millions of data points and, with attributes often very diverse, does require humans in the loop to improve its results. So your added custom attributes will make Simporter's data more useful for you. To create a custom attribute, follow these steps:

## Getting started

To add a new attribute to your list, click the "+ Add Attribute" button in your dashboard.

## Creating your attribute

In the Attribute Manager form that pops up, press the "Add Attribute" button to proceed.

## Select subcategories for your attribute

Choose the categories and subcategories where you want the new attribute by activating the buttons. The subcategory you were in when you clicked "+ Add Attribute" is selected by default. Hit "Submit" when you’re done.

## Sharing your attribute

Decide if you want to share this attribute with other users by turning on the button next to their names. Confirm your choices with the "Submit" button.

## Setting up the attribute

Enter the attribute's name, type (ingredient, need, or sensory attribute), and any keywords related to it. Be careful that the keywords are specific to an attribute, otherwise they may bring in undesirable data. Click "Submit" to finish creating your custom attribute.

## Checking the status of a custom attribute

For each custom attribute, there will be one of the following three statuses marked next to the attribute in your Attribute Manager window:

* Pending - After creating a custom attribute, information for it is collected on the server (the waiting time can range from several minutes to several hours. This depends on the server load);
* Provided - Information was collected on the custom attribute and it appeared in the general attribute table for this subcategory with calculated scores, products and reviews;
* No data - In this subcategory it was not possible to collect information on the custom attribute.
